Badhaka - Part:1

Today I am going to write about Badhaka.

Who is Badhaka?
Badhaka is a harasser or a tormentor or a source of annoyance, distress and obstacle.

Sometimes we find that there is considerable obstruction to whatever we do. We are not able to get the satisfaction of completion of work. In short we feel that there is no accomplishment after doing some work. The fate seems to be playing a damaging role inspite of continuous efforts, prodding etc. The obstruction damages everything. This is the role of Badhaka. This can be of various forms from a simple irritant to terrible incurable losses.

Every sign has an obstruction (Badhaka) sign called Badhaka Rasi and its Lord is called Badhakesa. For all Chara Rasis the eleventh house is Badhakasthana and its ruler is Badhakesa. For all Sthira Rasis the ninth house is the Badhakasthana and its ruler is Badhakesa. For all Upaya Rasis the seventhhouse is the Badhakasthana and its ruler is Badhakesa.

Since Badhaka refers to obstruction, the best remedy to pray Lord Ganesha who is the removar of obstacles. The twelve names of Ganesa as given by Naradha Muni can be chanted before start of any activity.

The Lord of the 22nd drekkana is the Kharesa and can cause Badhaka effects. This means he can cause obstructions and activate the badhakesa and other evils.

Harihara, the author of Prasna Marga gives two other theories for determination of the Badhaka Rasi. He says that for all Chara rasis the house of harm is always Kumba. For Simha, Kanya, Vrichika and Dhanur the house of harm is always Vrichika. For Makara the house of harm is Vrishapa. For Mithuna and Meena the house of harm is Dhanur. There is yet another view which states that the planets in Kendra to Badhaka rasi shall also be causing obstructions. But this view was not acceptable to many astrologers. This theory is based on the consideration that Kendra planets support each other. When it is Badhaka all planets will also do the obstruction.

When Sun or Moon is the Badhakesh, the person will loose his position of power or Job. He will be punished in the office.
When Mars or Saturn act as Badhakesh, there is danger to life due to accidents or atleast damage to parts of the body.
When Venus is acting as Badhakesh, the trouble comes from opposite sex, molestation, affliction or pain.
When Mercury plays the role of a Badhakesh, a contradiction or objection which is caused by a reasoning exercise.
When it comes to Jupiter the suffering will be on the happiness or intelligence.
When it comes to nodes Rahu and Ketu it is very serious. Exclusion from society, severe pain etc.

Badhakam or obstruction is caused due to the wrath of the deity also. The wrath of the deity is to be judged based on various factors.  The 12th house from Atmakaraka is the place of Ishta devatha. The 12th house from the Badhakesa indicates the past history of maintanemce of the deity.  If the Badhakesa is in an adverse place and afflicted, if a malefic planet is placed in the 12th house from Badhakesa, then the indications are that the worshipped image has been mutilated. This brings the wrath of the Deity signified by the Badhakesa. Depending n the malefic planet or Upagriha involved, we can infer the following.
1.       If Gulika or Rahu is there it is the curse of a serpant deity.
2.       If Saturn is there then it indicates impurity.
3.       If Mars is there then it indicates bad management and the curse of Karthikeya and Badrakali.
4.       If Sun is there it indicates Lord Shiva.
5.       If Moon is there it indicates the curse of Durga.
6.       If Mercury is there it is the curse of Krishna or Vishnu.
7.       If Jupiter is there it is the curse of Samba Shiva.

This will be continued in Part 2….

Please Note that:

  • Agni & Jala are considered as Nakshatra, Rasi and Loka Gantantha at Aswini, Asleha, Magha, Jyeshta, Mula and Revathi Stars. There is no bridging between Agni and Jala Nakshatras as thse are really junctions between different worlds - the three lokas. One has to leap to cross like a lion or a horse and sometimes they can fall and this will result in suffering. These three junctions are called Gantantha where ganta means Kandan - portion. This indicates that the best alone can survive. Anta means end.
  • At Purva Balguni and uttara balguni Tatwa Gantantha takes place between Agni and jala (between the stars) which indicates a fight between Celebacy Vs Marriage. Also between the stars a Nakshatra ganta takes place between Prithivi and view which will result in fluid loss and dryness.
  • Between Swathi and Visaka again a Nakshatra Ganta takes place between Agni and Jala which indicates Marriage widow etc.,
  • Tha nakshatra ruled by Ketu in the beginning of the agni signs and Mercury in the end of the Jala signs set in to Gantantha junctions. For this reason, the combination of Ketu and Mercury leads to breakage of bones due to a terrible fall or a natural disaster.
  • The nakshatras that do not get subjected to Gantantha are that of Jala Planets Venus and Moon and Vayu Planets Saturn and Rahu.

Effects of Dasa Lords at various location

A planet can readily and easily fulfill its responsibilities and duties when it is posited in Kendras and Konas. It can do so only when it is in good status and well influenced. In such conditions it can be the main reason for the event or happening to take place.
At the same time when a planet is placed in a dusthana will have difficulties and constraints to fulfill its responsibilities and duties? However if it is placed there in a strong manner or well influenced, yes, it still can fulfill its responsibilities and duties.

A planet placed in 6th bava, during its period, will make the native to face delay in getting results for his actions, make him to go into debt, or to overcome some enmity or health issues in order to get the results of his actions.
A planet placed in 8th bava will bring some unexpected change, crisis or even death. A Planet in 12th bava will make the native to spend more than required to get the results. The difference between 6th and 12th is that in 6th, he will spend the money he do not posses but that of obtained on loan and in 12th he will spend money earned by him.
Planets placed in 2nd, 3rd or 11th require more care and efforts to help the native to see the results. Planet in 2nd requires more responsibility and commitment, planet in 3rd require more efforts and will power, and the planets in 11th requires the native to fulfill certain objective before seeing the results.

While the position of the Main Dasa Lord is to be seen from the Lagna, the position of the Antar Dasa Lord is to be seen with respect to the position of the Main Dasa Lord. When ADL is placed in 6th, 8th and 12th from MDL, the period will be definitely more stressful, difficult, challenging. But at the same time if the ADL is in good dignity and well influenced, some good results will happen. If ADL is at Kendras or Konas from the MDL, the flow of results will be smooth. At the same time for good results the ADL should have a good dignity and well influenced. Similarly the other dasa lords like Pratyandar Dasa Lord etc., should be seen with respect to the previous higher level Lord.

AS far as Rahu and Ketu are concerned, they always give the effects of the bavas they are placed in. This means that they give the effects of their Bava Lords and of any planets in the bava where they are placed. In their own Dasa, Rahu and Ketu will generally give the effect of their Bava Lords. But during Antar Dasas of any planets they have joined with, they give the effects of the planets they have joined with. During their Antar Dasas,  Rahu and Ketu will give the effect of their bava lords. However during the Dasa of the planet they are joining in, they give the effects of the planet they are joining. So to judge Rahu and Ketu for their effects during their dasa period, simply judge the effects their dasa lord as well as the planets they have joined with.
Generally the Dasa Period of the Planet which is friendly with the Lagna Lord will help fructify the intentions and actions of the native by supporting it. The Dasa period of the planets that are friendly with Moon of the native will help to strengthen the natives mind.

Pancha Boothas

You all know Pancha Boothas. They are five tatvas in Vedic Astrology. Five different philosophies. Five different way of thinking, acting and so on.... Each Tatva has a relationship factor with other tatva. Tatva relationships are well defined by certain rules. These rules form the basis for all relationship definitions in Astrology.

First let us see what are these tatvas. Akash(Space), Agni(Fire), Vayu(Air), Jala(Water) and Prithvi(Earth) are the Pancha Boothas as well as Pancha Tatvas.

  • Akash is the magnetic field of a material plane. It is present in all other tatvas. It is friendly with all and it helps peace and harmony.
  • Agni and Vayu are friends just as fire is sustained by air.
  • Jala and Prithvi are friends since earth can hold and contain water.
  • Jala and Agni are enemies since fire will evaporate water and water will estinguish fire.
  • Vayu and Prithvi are enemies since earth (Mountain) will block the air flow and air will dry up the earth and create a dust.
  • Agni and Prithvi are neutral to each other yet they are not friendly.
  • Vayu and Jala are neutral yet they are not friendly.
How this is applied in Astrology?

Every star is attached to a Tatva. When two people belong to different tatvas are getting married and start a life together, their tatvas play a major role in their approach towards life. Ultimately they end up in harmony or divorce depending on the friendly or inimical nature of the stars.

Back Again!

Dear Friends,
I am writing once again after almost a year. In future you will find frequent blogs from me on Astrology. Today I am going to start writing about Vimsottari Dasa. You all know that out of about 32 dasas only this Dasa is considered by many astrologers for prediction of timing of events in one’s life. So let us start discussing about this dasa now. I am afraid that this topic is a bigger one and we will have to read about it from a number of blogs. I only expect a lot of patience in you to complete the reading of this in so many days.
This Vimsottari Dasa is a Nakshatra Dasa. It is always analysed in six steps. They are:
·         Main Dasa which is called Maha Dasa.
·         Intermediate dasa which is called Bukthi or Antar Dasa.
·         Next intermediate Dasa which is called Pratyanthar Dasa or Antaram.
·         Sookshma Antar Dasa which is also called Soohshmam.
·         Prana Antar Dasa which is also called Prana.
·         Netra Antar Dasa which is also called as Netra.
Please note that each of these Dasa have their own significance and important role play in any event.
·         The Maha dasa plays the role of captain of the team. It represents the main cause of what is happening and the time of event. All others play their role only in the context of chances given by the Main dasa.
·         The Antar Dasa is very important. It prepares the native for the event to happen. In other words it moves the native to the situation. Not only this but also another important role played by this AD. It provides a clue relevant to the happening.
·         The Pratyandar Dasa also pulls a native towards the event, a sort of craving for the incident.
·         The Sookshma Antar Dasa brings everything together and hence represents the immediate circumstances that lead to the happening.
·         The Prana Antar Dasa is acting like a paste (Concrete) to mix all the roles played by the four above and identifies or reveals the details of person or the cause that comes into a person’s life.
·         The Netra Antar Dasa is like icing on a cake. It decorates the event so that everything is made clear.
And thus each of these six players indicates one or the other cause or reason for the incident or happening.
We should know that there is a mutual agenda between all the six players. I mean, as players, the dasa lords of each, like Dasa Lord, Antar Dasa Lord etc., They all must indicate the same event. This means they all should be related to the event in one way or other but in several ways. Let us first take the first two players:

The Main Dasa or Maha Dasa Lord has to indicate the event in six ways:
·         As a Bava Lord as counted from Lagna
·         As a Karaka
·         As a dispositor of the Karaka.
·         As a dispositor of the Bava Lord
·         As being in the Bava which is counted from Lagna
·         As being in the bava which is  counted from Karaka
Note: Let me explain here who is called as dispositor:
Dispositor is the planet who is the lord of the sign. For instance, if Mars is in Cancer, Cancer is owned by the Moon and hence Moon becomes the dispositor of Mars.

The Antar Dasa Lord has to indicate the event in as much as nine ways:

·         As Bava Lord as counted from Lagna
·         AS Karaka
·         As the dispositor of the Karaka
·         As the dispositor of the Bava Lord
·         As being in the Bava which is counted from Lagna
·         As being in the bava which is  counted from Karaka
·         As a Bava Lord which is counted from the Main Dasa Lord
·         As a dispositor of the Bava Lord which is counted from the Main Dasa Lord
·         As being in the Bava which is counted from the Dasa Lord.
ü  Similarly The Pratyantar Dasa  Lord has to indicate the event with respect to Lagna or the Antar Dasa Lord
ü  The Sookshma Antar Dasa Lord has to indicate the event with respect to Lagna or Pratyantar Dasa Lord.
ü  The Prana Antar Dasa Lord has to indicate the event with respect to Lagna or Sookshma Antar Dasa Lord.
ü  The Netra  Antar Dasa Lord has to indicate the event with respect to Lagna or Netra  Antar Dasa Lord.

Let us consider two types of events, viz., Most Auspicious and Most Inauspicious. The most auspicious event shall happen during the Dasa of the Most Auspicious planet and during other levels of most auspicious planet with respect to the higher level of Dasa and vice versa.
Let’s continue on this subject on what Parasara says next.
